Beverly Hills police arrested the city's former deputy fire chief on suspicion of vandalism and stalking after linking him to a series of alleged incidents at city buildings.

Alfred Poirier, 63, of Santa Clarita, was taken into custody Tuesday, Sept. 22, and booked at the Beverly Hills Police Department, as first reported by the Los Angeles Times. He was released after posting $150,000 bail. Prosecutors have not filed formal charges.

Poirier spent four years as Beverly Hills' deputy fire chief, the department's second-in-command. The city announced his appointment in August 2022, and he retired in April.

The Beverly Hills Police Department said in a statement that detectives identified Poirier as a suspect after multiple vandalism incidents were discovered in the city on Sept. 21. The department said preliminary information indicates Poirier posted computer-generated images at various city facilities on multiple occasions.

Police did not describe the images, identify the facilities involved or name an alleged stalking victim.

Beverly Hills Police Capt. Kevin Orth declined to give further details on the stalking accusation or whether any city employees were targets, citing the ongoing investigation, the Times reported.

Poirier was arrested on suspicion of stalking under California Penal Code Section 646.9 and vandalism under Section 594, according to the Beverly Hills Standard. No public statement from Poirier or an attorney had appeared as of Sept. 24. The Times reported he could not be immediately reached for comment.

Before joining Beverly Hills, Poirier spent 36 years with the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD), where he served as chief deputy of emergency operations. In that role, he oversaw more than 100 fire stations and 1,000 firefighters and paramedics on duty each day.

At Beverly Hills, he oversaw emergency response operations, the safety and training division and system integration.

"Al is one of the most respected leaders in our industry," then-Beverly Hills Fire Chief Greg Barton said in August 2022, when the city announced Poirier's hire.

Poirier is scheduled to appear at Los Angeles County Superior Court's Airport Courthouse on Nov. 22. The police department said it would release additional information as the case progresses.
