Beverly Hills' plan to develop affordable housing on the Gale Yard site remains in a holding pattern five months after the City Council halted a proposed request for proposals and ordered more environmental study. No follow-up hearing date has been publicly posted, but the city continues to accept public comment on the project.
The Gale Yard, at 8401 Wilshire Blvd. at the corner of Gale Drive, is a city-owned lot one block from the future Wilshire/La Cienega Metro D Line station. Metro used the property as a construction staging yard for years and returned it to the city in October 2025 after completing station work.
The city is now exploring whether to partner with a developer to build affordable housing on the site to meet state requirements in its Housing Element of the General Plan, according to the city's development page for the project.
Council directed more study
On February 11, the City Council held a study session on whether to issue a request for proposals to develop the Gale Yard. Rather than green-light an RFP, the council directed staff to perform additional due diligence, environmental analysis, and public outreach first, according to city records.
The city followed up with a Southeast Area Community Meeting on March 23 focused on the neighborhood that includes the Gale Yard. A recording and agenda from that session are posted on the city's website.
Background
The planning process dates to 2022, when the city's Long Range Planning team hosted two public forums on the site's future. The second forum, on October 17, 2022, was led by a trained facilitator to identify community priorities. Residents flagged public safety, parking, and housing as top concerns for the area.
The city has not publicly stated the site's acreage or development capacity.
