Beverly Hills Police Chief Max Subin is urging residents to slow down as his department deploys additional officers for speed enforcement throughout July.

"Speeding is dangerous and puts everyone at risk," Subin said in a Monday, July 21 media release announcing the department's participation in National Speed Prevention Month. "Your daily choice to drive within the speed limit protects everyone in our community."

The campaign is one of Subin's first major public safety moves since he took over as chief on Friday, June 27. A 27-year BHPD veteran who joined the department in 1999, he now leads 154 sworn officers and 112 civilian staff.

Why the push

In California, 1,139 people were killed in speeding-related crashes in 2024, according to NHTSA data cited in the BHPD release. Speeding ranks as the top safety concern among California drivers surveyed in the 2025 California Traffic Safety Survey. The department did not release Beverly Hills-specific crash or citation data, nor did it specify how many additional officers are assigned to the effort or which streets they will focus on.

The release notes that even small increases in speed reduce reaction time and dramatically increase crash force.

What BHPD is asking drivers to do

The department outlined four steps:

  • Plan ahead and allow extra travel time.
  • Follow posted speed limits, especially in school and work zones.
  • Adjust speed for weather, traffic, and road conditions.
  • Avoid aggressive driving such as tailgating or weaving through traffic.
