Beverly Hills police detained a man Tuesday, Sept. 15, after a physical altercation with a city ambassador at Beverly Drive and Dayton Way.

Officers spoke with the ambassador at the scene and gathered information about the confrontation, The Beverly Hills Standard reported. Photographs published by The Standard showed officers beside the man on the sidewalk while the ambassador spoke with police nearby.

Beer containers and broken bottles were on the ground at the intersection. Whether alcohol played a role has not been confirmed.

What sparked the altercation and whether anyone was injured were not immediately known. Whether the detained man would face arrest or charges was also unclear as of Tuesday evening.

The Beverly Hills Police Department had not released a statement about the incident as of Wednesday, Sept. 16.

The ambassador is part of the city's unarmed downtown patrol program, run by contractor Block by Block since 2015. Ambassadors work with the city's Human Services department and police to address aggressive panhandling and connect people with social services.
