Beverly Hills turned the 400 block of North Rexford Drive into a block party Tuesday, Aug. 4, as residents mingled with police officers, firefighters and K-9 handlers at the city's annual National Night Out celebration.

The event marked Police Chief Max Subin's first major community appearance since he took command of the Beverly Hills Police Department on June 27. Subin, a former BHPD captain named chief by the City Council, will be formally sworn in Monday, Aug. 10.

"I'm excited to welcome our community to my first National Night Out as Chief of the Beverly Hills Police Department," Subin said in the department's July 29 media release announcing the event. "This event celebrates the partnerships that make our city so strong."

The free block party ran from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and featured SWAT trucks, a BearCat armored vehicle, vintage police and fire apparatus, and a Real Time Watch Center drone display. Families lined up for meet-and-greets with BHPD K-9 units and support dog Nami, tried the Quake Cottage earthquake simulator, and visited the 911 Dispatchers Booth and Crime Lab display.

DJ Keybo provided live music while kids cycled between face painting, balloon art, carnival games and a character-performer area. Food trucks lined the closed street, which was shut down from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. for setup and teardown.

The Beverly Hills Police Department organized the night in partnership with the fire department and community groups including CERT, JUST IN CASE BH, Beverly Hills CPR, the Drug Awareness Foundation and the Children's Burn Foundation. The Beverly Hills Public Library hosted a companion family storytime at the Children's Library Little Theater, 444 N. Rexford Drive.

The Beverly Press described Beverly Hills' National Night Out in its preview coverage as among the largest in the local area, drawing more participants than comparable events in West Hollywood and the LAPD's Wilshire and Olympic divisions.

The city confirmed the celebration on its official X and Facebook account Wednesday, Aug. 5, calling it an annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie.
