A five-car crash on the northbound 405 Freeway killed one person in the Sepulveda Pass on Monday, Sept. 7, backing up traffic on a primary commuter route between Beverly Hills and the San Fernando Valley.

The collision was reported just after 2:30 p.m. near the Sunset Boulevard and Getty Center Drive area, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD). One person was pronounced dead at the scene, KTLA reported. Authorities have not released the victim's identity, pending notification of next of kin.

A second person suffered minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital.

Firefighters cleared wreckage and stabilized the scene while working alongside Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) officers, Brentwood News LA reported. Aerial footage from ABC7 showed several ambulances and fire trucks on the freeway, with traffic squeezing through a couple of open lanes.

The LAFD warned drivers that the crash heavily impacted northbound traffic and urged commuters to seek alternate routes.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. No information about speed or contributing factors has been released.
