Bel Air and Holmby Hills drivers face five consecutive nights of major lane reductions and ramp closures on Interstate 405 through the Sepulveda Pass starting Monday, Aug. 24, as Caltrans ramps up its $143.7 million pavement rehabilitation project.

The closures run nightly from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. through Friday, Aug. 28, according to Westside Today. Work crews will resurface pavement and install K-rail barriers along both directions of the freeway. Not all listed closures will necessarily be in effect simultaneously each night; Caltrans describes the work as intermittent, and nightly configurations may vary.

The scope is significant. Northbound I-405 will lose up to five lanes between Skirball Center Drive/Mulholland Drive and Sepulveda Boulevard, up to four lanes between Wilshire Boulevard and Skirball Center Drive, and up to three lanes from Sepulveda Boulevard to Victory Boulevard. Southbound lanes will be reduced by up to four between U.S. Route 101 and Wilshire Boulevard.

Ramp and connector closures

Multiple northbound off-ramps will shut down overnight, including exits at Getty Center Drive, Skirball Center Drive/Mulholland Drive, Ventura Boulevard, Burbank Boulevard and Victory Boulevard. The northbound on-ramps at Skirball Center Drive/Mulholland Drive and Burbank Boulevard will also close.

On the southbound side, off-ramps and on-ramps at Sepulveda Boulevard and Ventura Boulevard will be closed.

Perhaps most disruptive for late-night commuters: all connectors between I-405 and U.S. Route 101 will be completely shut down during the overnight work windows. That includes the northbound I-405 connectors to both directions of the 101, the southbound 101 connector to southbound I-405, and the northbound 101 connectors to both directions of I-405.

What drivers should know

Speed limits through the active work zone drop to 55 mph, a restriction in place since May 26 that is expected to remain through early 2027, according to the Caltrans District 7 project page.

During a prior weekend closure in July, Caltrans was "strongly urging commuters to utilize public transit or map out alternate routes," as Century City Westwood News reported July 24. The agency's official detour for that closure routed northbound 101 drivers to exit at Sepulveda Boulevard, travel south, and re-enter I-405 via the Sepulveda Boulevard on-ramp. Caltrans has not published specific detour guidance for the Aug. 24–28 closures.

The contractor yard for the project sits at the Skirball Yard off Mulholland Drive, near American Jewish University, directly adjacent to the Bel Air/Holmby Hills corridor. Residents near the construction zone should expect overnight noise, ground vibrations and dust during work hours.

The bigger project

The closures are part of the I-405 Sepulveda Pass Pavement Rehabilitation Project, a 10.2-mile effort between Van Nuys and Westwood. The joint venture between CA Rasmussen, Inc. and FBD Vanguard Construction, Inc. began work in summer 2025 and expects to finish by winter 2027. The Bel Air Hills Association has been relaying Caltrans closure notices to residents throughout the project.

Caltrans notes that about 25 extended weekend closures and 15 to 20 overnight full closures are planned over the life of the project.
