Beverly Hills' Greystone Mansion opens for wine, food and self-guided tours on Sunday, Sept. 27, marking 98 years since the Doheny family moved in.

Friends of Greystone, the nonprofit that supports the estate, is hosting its annual "Twilight on the Terrace" from 4 to 7 p.m. at 905 Loma Vista Drive. RSVPs are required, and attendees check in by name at the door.

Mastro's Steakhouse in Beverly Hills is sponsoring the hors d'oeuvres. Wine will be served.

Inside the mansion

The evening's main draw is a self-guided walk through the 46,054-square-foot mansion, which is normally closed to the public and opens only for special events. The 55-room Tudor Revival home sits on 18.3 acres overlooking the city.

Architect Gordon Kaufmann designed the estate, which was built with steel-reinforced concrete faced in Indiana limestone and topped with Welsh slate. Inside, visitors can see hand-carved oak banisters and black-and-white inlaid marble floors in the grand hall. The entertainment wing includes a movie theater, a Brunswick bowling alley, a billiard room and a hidden bar.

A 98-year-old housewarming

The event marks the 98th anniversary of Ned Doheny, his wife Lucy and their five children moving into the residence in September 1928. Ned's father, oil tycoon Edward Laurence Doheny Sr., gave his son a 12.58-acre hilltop parcel as a wedding gift in 1926. Construction began in February 1927, and the full estate took three years to finish at a total cost of $3,166,578.12, according to the Friends of Greystone history page. The mansion alone cost $1,238,378.76.

The City of Beverly Hills dedicated the grounds as a public park on Sept. 16, 1971. The estate joined the National Register of Historic Places in 1976 and became Beverly Hills Historic Landmark No. 4 in 2013.

How to attend

Friends of Greystone members at the "Friend" level or higher attend free. Non-members pay $60. First-time members who join at that level will have their membership valid through Dec. 31, 2027. RSVPs and membership information are available at greystonemansion.org/events.
