Harvard-Westlake girls volleyball ended an 11-year drought against Bel Air's Marymount on Friday, Sept. 25, winning in five sets to snap a 21-match losing streak in the Mission League series.
The Wolverines hadn't beaten the Sailors since Oct. 22, 2015. They rallied from a two-sets-to-one deficit to close out the match 25-18, 21-25, 18-25, 25-23, 15-13, according to the Harvard-Westlake Chronicle.
The result flipped the script from Sept. 15, when Marymount beat Harvard-Westlake 3-2 in the teams' first meeting of the season. Marymount entered the week ranked No. 5 in California by High School on SI. Harvard-Westlake sat at No. 12.
"We really wanted to leave this legacy of being the team that finally beat Marymount, because that hasn't happened in [over a] decade," middle hitter Ruby Sampson told the Chronicle. "We just knew we all wanted it for each other."
Sampson, committed to Boston College, was one of three college-bound Wolverines who spoke after the match. Middle hitter Kahala Faucher, a University of Chicago commit, credited the team's togetherness as the difference. Libero Ashley Sakonju, committed to the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), said weeks of targeted preparation paid off.
The streak-ending win is the latest milestone for a program that has surged under head coach Morgan Wijay. Hired in December 2024 after winning two state titles at Bishop Alemany, Wijay guided Harvard-Westlake to the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) State Division I championship in her first season. The Wolverines swept Woodcreek in the final on Nov. 21, 2025, according to MaxPreps.
Harvard-Westlake entered 2026 ranked third in the CIF Southern Section and 34th nationally. The record now stands at 15-10.
The schedule gets tougher. Harvard-Westlake hosts Sierra Canyon on Tuesday, Sept. 29. Sierra Canyon carried a 23-1 record and the No. 2 ranking in California as of the Sept. 22 state poll.
