Residents can hear one of California's most recognized earthquake scientists for free on Sunday, Aug. 23, when Dr. Lucy Jones speaks at All Saints' Beverly Hills.

Jones, who spent 33 years with the U.S. Geological Survey and now directs the Dr. Lucy Jones Center for Science and Society at Caltech, will present "The Moral Imperative of Disaster Resilience" at 11:30 a.m. at the church, 504 N. Camden Drive. No registration is required.

The talk will explore how community bonds and social capital shape a neighborhood's ability to recover from earthquakes and climate-driven disasters, according to the Beverly Press. The Eventbrite listing frames the talk around a central question: what loving our neighbors looks like in earthquake country.

Jones created the Great ShakeOut earthquake drill, which now draws more than 57 million participants worldwide. She serves as science advisor for seismic safety to Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and developed the methodology California uses for earthquake advisories. Her book, "The Big Ones," is available in seven languages.

The event arrives as Beverly Hills continues to sharpen its own preparedness posture. The city renamed its emergency zones on Aug. 18 to align with state and regional agencies, and Beverly Hills Fire Chief Greg Barton said in a May press release that "preparedness is a shared responsibility."

All Saints' Episcopal Church, which opened on Easter Day 1925 on Camden Drive, seats more than 500 in its main sanctuary. Street parking is available on Santa Monica Boulevard, and a parking garage sits on the boulevard's south side.
