A man died after a late-night fight in a Beverly Hills alley on Sunday, Aug. 30, and a second man was hospitalized, the Beverly Hills Police Department said.

Officers responded at approximately 11:39 p.m. to a report of an altercation between two men in the alley behind the 400 block of North Palm Drive, according to a BHPD media release. The block sits in the Flats, a residential neighborhood east of Rodeo Drive.

Officers found one man with a wound to his neck. They provided aid before Beverly Hills Fire Department (BHFD) paramedics transported him to a local hospital, where he died.

The second man, described by police as a Beverly Hills resident, also sustained injuries. BHFD paramedics took him to a local hospital for treatment and evaluation.

Neither man has been identified.

Police have not released details about what led to the fight or announced any charges, the Los Angeles Times reported. No official cause of death has been determined.

BHPD detectives are investigating the circumstances and believe the incident was isolated, with no other parties involved. The department labeled the case a "death investigation" in its Monday, Aug. 31, release. It has not said whether the case will be reclassified as a homicide.

Chief of Police Max Subin said in the release that officers arrived quickly and provided medical aid to both men before paramedics got to the scene. He said detectives are working to determine what led to the altercation.

Subin, a 27-year BHPD veteran, was sworn in as chief on Aug. 10, succeeding Mark Stainbrook, who retired in June. BHPD Lt. Kevin Orth, the department's public information officer, is listed as the media contact on the release.
