Up to four lanes of the I-405 through the Sepulveda Pass will close every night this week as Caltrans resurfaces the freeway that connects Bel Air to both the San Fernando Valley and the Westside.

The closures run from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. nightly, Monday, Aug. 3, through Friday, Aug. 7, affecting both northbound and southbound traffic between Wilshire Boulevard and U.S. 101, according to Westsidetoday.com. Speed limits drop to 55 mph through active work zones.

The work is part of Caltrans' $143.7 million I-405 Pavement Rehabilitation Project, which has generated recurring closures in the pass since February. Crews will install concrete barriers and resurface pavement during the overnight windows.

What's closing

In the heart of the pass, up to four northbound lanes may shut between Wilshire Boulevard and Skirball Center Drive/Mulholland Drive, and between Skirball Center Drive/Mulholland Drive and Sepulveda Boulevard. The same four-lane maximum applies southbound between U.S. 101 and Skirball Center Drive/Mulholland Drive, and between Skirball Center Drive/Mulholland Drive and Wilshire Boulevard.

Farther north, up to two lanes may close in each direction between Sepulveda Boulevard and Victory Boulevard.

Ramp closures hitting Bel Air

Several ramps serving Bel Air neighborhoods will shut during the nightly windows:

  • Moraga Drive on-ramp to northbound I-405
  • Northbound I-405 off-ramp to Moraga Drive
  • Northbound I-405 off-ramp to Getty Center Drive
  • Eastbound Wilshire Boulevard on-ramp to northbound I-405

Additional ramp closures include the Sepulveda Boulevard, Ventura Boulevard, and Burbank Boulevard on-ramps to southbound I-405, plus both U.S. 101 connectors to southbound I-405 and the southbound U.S. 101 connector to northbound I-405.

Weekend closure follows

The nightly work doesn't end the disruption. Starting at 10 p.m. Friday, Aug. 7, southbound I-405 will be reduced to three lanes through 5 a.m. Monday, Aug. 10, according to a Caltrans District 7 announcement.

Caltrans posted two official detours for that weekend. Northbound U.S. 101 traffic should exit at Sepulveda Boulevard, head south, and rejoin southbound I-405 via the Skirball Center Drive/Sepulveda Boulevard on-ramp. Southbound U.S. 101 traffic should exit at Van Nuys Boulevard, go south to Ventura Boulevard, then west to Sepulveda Boulevard and south to the same on-ramp.

Alternate routes and resources

Sepulveda Boulevard remains the primary alternate route for I-405 closures through the pass. Caltrans advises drivers to allow extra travel time or avoid the corridor entirely during construction hours. All work is weather-dependent and may shift if delays arise.

Residents near the construction zone may experience noise, vibrations, and dust during overnight hours. The Bel Air Hills Association noted in its February newsletter that residents can sign up for direct I-405 Project Alerts through Caltrans for future closure notices.
