Rodeo Drive's fourth annual fashion celebration wraps up Sunday, Aug. 9, capping a week of private boutique experiences, artisan demonstrations and limited-edition launches that marked the luxury district's 50-year evolution from an ordinary neighborhood street into a global shopping destination.
The Rodeo Drive Celebrates Fashion event, which began Aug. 3, featured participating retailers including Abel Richard, which hosted guided presentations of its handbag collection and Montegrappa writing instruments; Bvlgari, which offered an invitation-only boutique tour and brunch; and Vicky on Rodeo, which ran a breakfast special throughout the week.
CELINE sponsored a street banner campaign along the three-block stretch, featuring designs inspired by the fashion house's "Infinite Possibilities" silk scarf collection.
The celebration also honored the legacy of Fred Hayman, who opened Giorgio Beverly Hills at 273 Rodeo Drive in 1961 and founded the Rodeo Drive Committee in 1977 with a group of business leaders including property developer Donald Tronstein. Hayman, known as "the godfather of Rodeo Drive," sold the Giorgio Beverly Hills fragrance brand to Avon in 1987 for $165 million. He died in 2016 at age 90.
His son Robert Hayman was recognized for continuing his father's work.
"Rodeo Drive has always been about more than retail," Robert Hayman told the Beverly Press. "It's about hospitality, glamour, entertainment and creating the experience people will remember. That was my father's vision from the beginning, and it's remarkable to see how it continues to evolve for a new generation."
Rodeo Drive Committee President Kathy Gohari said the event celebrated the visionaries, relationships and experiences that built the street over five decades. Beverly Hills Mayor Craig Corman called the milestone a recognition of both the district's history and its continued evolution through architecture, art and dining.
The district matters to city coffers. By 1980, Beverly Hills estimated Rodeo Drive accounted for as much as 25% of the city's sales tax revenues, according to the Rodeo Drive Committee's history. The district now hosts more than 100 luxury brands across its three palm-dotted blocks.
The Committee's next event, Rodeo Drive Celebrates Timepieces & Fine Jewelry, runs Oct. 5–11, followed by the Holiday Lighting Celebration on Thursday, Nov. 19.
