Nine Beverly Hills landmarks earned the city's first-ever Historic Preservation Awards earlier this year, recognizing private-sector efforts to protect the architectural character of a city where demolition often outpaces preservation.
The Cultural Heritage Commission selected winners across four categories from the program's inaugural nomination cycle. The awards were presented at Greystone Mansion by Mayor Craig Corman, who said the program exists to "honor those in the private sector who continue to carry out our city's vision of protecting and preserving the places that make Beverly Hills so special."
The Pendleton-Evans Residence at 1033 Woodland Drive and the Fine Arts Ahrya Theatre at 8554 Wilshire Boulevard took the Restoration and Preservation Award. The Woodland Drive home was designed by architect John Elgin Woolf in the Hollywood Regency style and built in 1941 for art dealer James Pendleton. Film producer Robert Evans lived there from the 1960s until his death in 2019. The Fine Arts Theatre, a Zigzag Moderne landmark designed by B. Marcus Priteca, opened in 1936 and has held city historic landmark status since 2017.
Five properties shared the Renovation and Rehabilitation Award. The Saban Theatre at 8440 Wilshire Boulevard was recognized for its lobby and rotunda restoration. Rabbi David Baron of the Beverly Hills Temple of the Arts, which acquired the 1930 Art Deco theater in 2005, said the honor acknowledges "all the hard work we've been doing in historic preservation of a very important landmark in our city." The other four recipients were 9595 Wilshire Boulevard, 9231 Olympic Boulevard, Givenchy at Anderton Court at 332 North Rodeo Drive, and TRM Services for the Hillcrest Shelter Rehabilitation Project at 900 Hillcrest Road.
Friends of Robinson Gardens received the Historic Site Stewardship Award. Phillip Savenick took the Historic Awareness and Education Award.
The commission meets next on Wednesday, July 8 at 1:30 p.m. at Beverly Hills City Hall. Residents interested in nominating a property for the next cycle can monitor beverlyhills.org/preservationawards or email [email protected]. No dates for the 2027 nomination cycle have been announced.
