The iconic Union 76 gas station at Crescent Drive and Little Santa Monica Boulevard is getting a new tenant: Maggie's Refuel, a convenience store that will sell pastries, coffee drinks, and snacks alongside the station's existing fuel pumps and new EV chargers.
Alex Canter, founder and CEO of Maggie's Refuel Inc. and a fourth-generation member of the family behind Canter's Deli on Fairfax Avenue, confirmed the Beverly Hills location to trade publication CSP Daily News on July 8.
"We couldn't be happier to be bringing Maggie's to life in such a special location," Canter told CSP. He said the store will feature soft serve, lattes on draft, matcha, locally sourced pastries, and curated snacks, along with food collaborations with local restaurants.
The concept, named after Canter's French and English bulldog mix, will convert the existing station rather than build from scratch. The convenience store footprint will run about 2,000 square feet, according to Patch Beverly Hills. The 76 fuel brand will remain at the pumps.
Maggie's raised $2 million in a 2025 pre-seed funding round from Matchstick Ventures, Mucker Capital, and Everywhere Ventures, according to CSP Daily News and Patch Beverly Hills. Its advisory board includes James Keyes, former president and CEO of 7-Eleven, and Walter Robb, former CEO of Whole Foods Market, per CSP Daily News. Patch and other outlets also name Meredith Sandland, a former Starbucks executive vice president, as an advisor.
Canter previously co-founded virtual restaurant company Nextbite, which he sold to hospitality investor Sam Nazarian in 2023. Nextbite had raised more than $150 million, including from SoftBank.
The station itself is a piece of Beverly Hills history. Designed by architect Gin Wong of Pereira and Associates and completed in 1965, the Googie-style structure features a swooping parabolic canopy originally conceived for Los Angeles International Airport. The Los Angeles Conservancy recognizes it as one of the world's finest examples of Googie architecture, and the Beverly Hills City Council granted it local landmark status in May 2018.
That landmark designation generally subjects exterior alterations to additional city review, though no specific process for this project has been announced. No building permit application, planning commission hearing, or city council review date is on the public record. Canter told CSP Daily News he expects the store to open in 2027, but no specific month has been confirmed.
Beyond food and fuel, Maggie's plans to offer EV charging and a mobile app with loyalty rewards, according to reporting by the New York Post. The concept draws inspiration from Japan's 7-Eleven culture and the now-closed Chicago-based Foxtrot Market chain, which shut down in 2024.
Residents who want to track the project can monitor Beverly Hills Planning Commission agendas. No public comment period has been scheduled as of July 8.
