Bel Air and Holmby Hills drivers face a week of overnight lane shutdowns on Interstate 405 through the Sepulveda Pass.

Caltrans crews will close multiple lanes and ramps between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. nightly from Monday, Nov. 2, through Friday, Nov. 6, to install concrete K-rails and repave sections of the freeway, Brentwood News LA reported. The work is part of the $143.7 million 405 Pavement Rehabilitation Project, which spans a 10.2-mile stretch between Westwood and Van Nuys, according to Caltrans' project page.

The speed limit drops to 55 mph through construction zones in both directions.

What's closing

The following intermittent closures are scheduled during the overnight work window. Individual closure times may vary, and not all ramps will close simultaneously.

Northbound I-405:

  • Up to four lanes closed between Wilshire Boulevard and Skirball Center Drive/Mulholland Drive
  • Up to five lanes closed between Skirball Center Drive/Mulholland Drive and Sepulveda Boulevard
  • Up to two lanes closed between Sepulveda Boulevard and Victory Boulevard
  • Getty Center Drive on- and off-ramps closed

Southbound I-405:

  • Up to four lanes closed between U.S. 101 and Skirball Center Drive/Mulholland Drive
  • Sepulveda Boulevard on- and off-ramps closed
  • Burbank Boulevard on-ramp closed

Freeway connectors:

  • Northbound U.S. 101 connector to southbound I-405 closed
  • Southbound U.S. 101 connector to northbound I-405 closed

What to expect

Plan for delays. Caltrans said its goal during overnight weekday lane reductions is to keep delays to 15 minutes above normal traffic levels. The agency said it begins adjusting operations once delays reach that threshold.

Not all ramps along the project will close at the same time. Caltrans' Traffic Management Center updates closures on the agency's Quickmap tool as crews open or close ramps.

The bigger picture

The rehabilitation project covers replacing sections of two lanes in each direction from Victory Boulevard to Mulholland Drive, restoring nearly 92 lane miles overall. The work also includes replacing two overhead sign structures, 98 sign panels and upgrading 6,400 feet of guardrail, according to Caltrans. A joint venture between CA Rasmussen, Inc. and FBD Vanguard Construction, Inc. is handling the work.

Construction started in summer 2025, with completion anticipated in winter 2027. Caltrans said all construction will pause for three months in summer 2028 for the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Residents near the construction zone may experience noise and vibrations during overnight work. Caltrans said nighttime noise from contractor operations between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. will comply with maximum allowed regulations at a distance of 50 feet. Schedules are subject to change due to weather or operational conditions.
