Markus Persson, the Swedish billionaire who created "Minecraft," has listed his Beverly Hills mega-mansion for $70 million, the Los Angeles Times reported on Tuesday, Oct. 27.
The $70 million asking price matches the roughly $70 million Persson paid in 2014. Whether he recoups that purchase price will depend on the eventual sale.
If the estate sells at $70 million, it would be the priciest home sale in Beverly Hills this year. It would rank second in Los Angeles County behind Casa Encantada, the storied Bel-Air mansion that PayPal co-founder Peter Thiel bought for $130 million at a foreclosure auction in July.
The property at 1181 N. Hillcrest Rd. sits on an acre overlooking Los Angeles. It spans 22,300 square feet with eight bedrooms, 15 bathrooms, an elevator, a movie theater and a swimming pool. Persson added a recording studio and a private nightclub with a DJ booth after buying the home.
The house came loaded with extras from its original developer, Bruce Makowsky: a $200,000 candy room, a 2,500-bottle wine cellar stocked with Dom Perignon and an art installation featuring a chrome machine gun.
Listing agent Aaron Kirman said Persson is selling because he no longer spends much time in Los Angeles, the Times reported. Kirman and Katia De Los Reyes of Christie's International Real Estate Southern California hold the listing alongside Branden Williams and Rayni Williams of The Beverly Hills Estates.
Persson reportedly beat out Jay-Z and Beyoncé for the property in 2014, according to the Times. He had just sold his company, Mojang Studios, to Microsoft for $2.5 billion.
Known as “Notch,” Persson created “Minecraft” and co-founded Mojang, which Microsoft acquired for $2.5 billion in November 2014. Guinness World Records recognizes “Minecraft” as the bestselling video game of all time.
